APPEARANCE: Typically straight open grain. Medium to coarse texture. Pinkish to light reddish brown or light brown color.

WORKABILITY: Good working properties but requires sharp tools due to hardness. Bluntng effect on tooling is moderate. Predrilling of fasteners is required to prevent splitting. Gluing is satisfactory. Turns well. Good boring and mortising properties. Sands and finishes well. Often used for steam bending. Chemical staining possible in contact with iron or steel.
PERFORMANCE: Moderate movement in service. Little natural durability or resistance to decay and insects.
PRESERVATION: Resistant to preservative treatment.
